Ourika Valley Villa

This rural villa is located in the bucolic Ourika river valley which serves as an escape from the noise of bustling Marrakech. Situated within a wedge-shaped parcel of land in the Atlas Mountains, the design of this guest house embraces the challenges of its irregular site to create a distinctive architectural statement. The meandering layout responds directly to the terrain, unfolding as a sequence of interconnected spaces that balance intimacy with openness. 215 m² of interior space is distributed across two primary levels on a 500 m² site.

Design and Construction

Rooted in vernacular traditions, the design harmonizes with its neighbors through scale and materiality, employing local stone, plaster, and handcrafted finishes that set the building in its context. At the same time, its unconventional geometry and carefully articulated details set it apart, offering visitors a memorable experience. Privacy is achieved despite the proximity to the road, with terraces, breeze block screens, and strategically placed glazing that filters views while framing the breathtaking panorama of the Atlas Mountains. The curved facades unfold toward olive groves, integrating patios of various sizes under the canopy of mature trees. Upper-level terraces offer soaring views over the groves to the iron-oxide red rock formations beyond.

Custom steel doors and window frames reference Morocco’s early modernist tradition, while the interiors fuse traditional craftsmanship with contemporary furnishings. Eclectic retro furniture pieces and curated artwork add character and warmth, creating a layered atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Re-used objects, such as antique doors and salvaged decorative elements, reinforce the sense of continuity with the past, reflecting the valley’s layered cultural identity, while contributing to the project’s sustainable ethos.

By weaving together architectural form, interior design, and contextual sensitivity, the project creates a joyous space imbedded in its surroundings; contextually in place, yet contemporary in its offerings.

Atlas Mountain Guest Villa

Villa Zarzur

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is a small historic town about 65 km outside of Fez. Perched on a steep mountainside, its medina is built around the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, Morocco's most important pilgrimage site. The nearby ruins of Volubilis draw both Moroccan on foreign tourists who come to explore the ancient remains of this Roman town.

In response to increasing tourism, Villa Zarzur is an adaptive renovation of two abandoned riads which climbs five stories up the rocky hillside and overlooks the mausoleum and town square. Named after a native bird often seen on site, Villa Zarzur will be a boutique hotel with seven guest suites, a dining hall, and roof terraces.

A359 surveyed and assessed the existing structure to determine the best strategy for adapting the old labyrinth of rooms into open, flowing spaces with panoramic views of the town and surrounding countryside. Working closely with the clients, A359 is developing a vision of a hotel which blends rural Moroccan and classic modern design elements in a minimalist and context-sensitive manner.
